Sunlu was kind enough to lend an engineering prototype of this new product, for my review and unbiased opinion. As a new product beta tester for several companies, I was glad to help. They asked for honest feedback and suggestions, prior to release on Kickstarter.Beyond some minor shipping damage by the carrier, and a few typos/wording suggestions for the firmware screens, I'm quite impressed with this new printer. I was assured that they will improve packaging, and will have the firmware adjusted prior to final release.
The printer has been in 24 hour service, in our printer room, for the past few weeks. It has performed remarkably well, and is currently being used as part of a large project being printed by 5 printers. There has not been a single failed print, and it is literally “Stock” right out ofthe box with only about 10 minutes invested to assemble it.
The S9 Plus builds on the successful Sunlu S8 Plus and Sunlu S8 Pro models, with some additional unique “firsts”. As far as I know, no other printer on the market has a clog detection pause feature, or an integrated filament dryer.
The included features, price point, and the ease of assembly makes this a great choice for both experienced or inexperienced makers. It arrives over 90% pre-assembled, in a large box.

Things I would have liked to see: (upgrades that I will add in the future)

A look under the hood. Panel removes easily for access to power supply connections.
The machine is managed by a Sunlu S9 Plus v1 controller, with TMC2208 silent stepper drivers and theATMEGA2560-16AU chip w/256KB flash memory
The menus are easy to understand, and clearly laid out
Print quality has been nearly perfect, and the auto leveling device makes it easy.
In my testing, after using the ABL feature, every print was nearly perfect!
A metal extruder is included, as well as a filament breakage, run-out, and clog sensor
The S9 Plus printer includes an integrated S1 PLUS filament dryer.
The S1 Plus includes a fan within, and connects directly to the printer, for remote control.
You can set the time and temperature from the printer screen.
A QUICK TOUR OF SETTING UP THE S9 PLUS Mike Labbe
Initial opening of the large box, which was fairly well packaged.
After removing the top layer, here is what is inside. Notice the filadryer set carefully, in the center of the package. This is removed first, and set aside.
The parts required for assembly are included in bags that are organized by number.
Sunlu also includes a scraper, cutter, regular and allens wrenches, USB wire, sd card, sd card
USB adapter, nozzle cleaning needle, S1 Plus filadryer, tie wraps, spool holder, power cord, spare
parts, and a starter roll of filament. Most are in this photo:
Set the remaining piece carefully on the work surface, and snip the shipping tie wraps.
Be aware to protect wires, as they are already pre-connected.
Remove the packing foam blocks, and note where the top assembly will screw into the base.
Turn the base on its side, so the upper assembly can easily be bolted with 4 of the bolts included.
Tighten each of these completely.
Install and tighten strut brackets and hardware, from parts bag 3
Tighten the strut assembly lock nuts (4), to secure.
This is what it will look like, when assembled with both support struts.
Finally, screw the filament holder to the top of the frame, with the included hardware. If you will only be feeding from the included filament dryer, you may not wish to install this piece. Both feeding methods are included with the printer.
That was about it. Assembly was EASY, and took no more than 10 minutes! There is slicer software included on the provided SD Card, but I chose to use a generic profile and installed the current version of Ultimaker Cura.
Although not generally necessary, here are some extra things to check with any new printer.
Make sure the print head assembly and print bed travel without obstruction, and lack wiggle. If either requires adjustment, there are eccentric nuts to adjust tension on the movement wheels.
There are also 4 bolts that can be adjusted on the bed frame.
Before initial use, confirm that the voltage is set correctly for your country.
You can lay the printer on its side, for access to see this switch.
