lets talk power requirements...

forward - i am an electrician, i am in the united states.  the rules here  (and by each state) vary.

I had a little down time after work today, and in anticipation for the H3C to show up, i figured i would add another dedicated 20A circuit.

In the united states a general use duplex receptacle (wall outlet) is 120V, and in a residential unit, generally 15A with a few exceptions.  to figure out how much "power" you have on each circuit it is Volts * Amps = Watts.  (we are keeping this basic, this is just a basic guide line)

A 20A 120v circuit will have 2400 watts

A 15A 120v circuit will have 1800 watts.

But that doesn't tell the whole story. That is what the circuit can safely carry, until the wires begin to heat up.  After 3 hours, you have to "de-rate" the circuit to 80%.  To get to 80% we multiply the watts by .8.

A 20a 120v circuit will have 1920 watts available if the loads last longer than 3 hours.

A 15A 120v circuit will have 1440 watts available if the loads last longer than 3 hours.

My current 3d printing setup will include (waiting for some stuff) (these numbers are worse case scenario. start up and or heating)

  • 1 - H2C - 1250 watts
  • 2 - AMS2Pro - 80 watts each
  • 1 - AMS HT - 150 watts
  • 1 - Voron trident 350mm - 600 watts (printer) + 1000watts (print bed heater)
  • 1 - Sunlu S4 - 350 watts
  • 1 - Sunlu E2 - 500 watts
  • 2 - DCi10  - 500 watts
  • 1 - H3C  - 1800 watts

these number are as bad as they can get, the actual wattage while being used will be much, much lower.  The watts will vary based on what your printing, heating cycles, and such. for the WORST case, i start everything all at once i would be looking at almost 7000 watts.  I realize that will never happen, and i will not be sized for it. It *should* cause a breaker to trip.

So, now i have 2 - 20A circuits at my print bench.  How do i go about splitting this up?  here is what I think im going to do, if you have any recommendations, let me know!

Circuit 1

  • H2C w/ the 2 AMS 2 pro, and AMS HT
  • Sunlu S4
  • 2 x DCi10

circuit 2

  • Voron trident
  • Sunlu E2
  • H3C

My reasoning is, I have to keep the H2, and H3 on different circuits .  They are the largest load.  But why would i put the voron, the other large load on with the H3C? Well, the H3C wont be running any dryers, i dry before i load the printer, And it will mostly be a petg / pla machine.  The h2c will be changing over to mostly engineering filaments, and ABS. so that will have the heated chamber running alot.

oh yea, i'm adding USB receptacles so that i can keep my other devices charged up too.
